Total Hip Replacement

During total hip replacement, the surgeon removes the damaged sections of the hip joint and replaces them with parts typically made of metal, ceramic, and very hard plastic. This artificial joint (prosthesis) helps reduce pain and improves function.

This surgery is an option for people with hip pain that interferes with daily activities when more conservative treatments are no longer effective. Arthritis damage is the most common reason for needing a hip replacement.
